Sechenov Leaders Program Curriculum: Why Fundamental Science Comes First
Before a doctor can treat disease, they have to understand how a healthy body works and what changes when something goes wrong. That is the role of the fundamental disciplines, the first of four building blocks in the Sechenov Leaders program curriculum. This article explains what this block covers, why it matters so much and how it connects to everything that follows.

What “fundamental” means here
The fundamental disciplines deal with the theoretical foundations of medicine. Their focus is on normal processes in the human body and on pathological ones, the mechanisms that turn health into illness. It is the knowledge that lets a physician reason about a patient instead of simply memorizing protocols. In the Leaders track, these subjects are taught in small groups, so students can question, discuss and test their understanding instead of listening passively.
The link between theory and the bedside
The second block, clinical education, is built directly on the first. Its purpose is to turn theoretical knowledge into practical skills in diagnosis and treatment. A student who understands why a process goes wrong is better prepared to recognize it in a real patient and choose a sensible response. Clinical practice itself takes place in leading Moscow medical institutions, including federal-level clinics, under experienced mentors.
A gateway to research
Fundamental science is also the starting point for the program’s research block. Students take part in fundamental and applied studies, present their findings and prepare publications with guidance from leading faculty. The university’s research priorities, including genomics, proteomics, regenerative medicine, neuroscience and artificial intelligence in medicine, all rest on a solid grasp of basic biological and medical science. Additional research disciplines are included in the tuition, together with access to laboratories and the university’s research base.
Part of a broader curriculum
The fourth block, leadership competencies, develops management and communication skills: self-management, coaching and team leadership. Alongside it, the curriculum weaves in elements of digital health and innovative approaches to research. The overall idea is that a modern physician needs a firm academic base, applied clinical skills and the ability to lead, and the fundamental disciplines anchor the first of these.
Studying the foundations in English
Teaching across the program is in English, which allows applicants from the UAE and other countries to focus on the science itself from day one. Each student also has a curator and can follow an individual development path with extra disciplines and master classes.
